Handy Util: WinSplit Revolution

WinSplit Revolution logo Now that every monitor I use has “wide” tacked onto its name, I find I spend a fair amount of time resizing windows so that I can get two or three all visible at the same time. Might as well get my money’s worth and use all them pixels, right?

For instance, when doing web development, it’s nice to have a couple browsers going side by side to see what sort of havoc my latest CSS changes have wrought. Or half a screen for the editor and a pair of browsers each in a fourth.

imageWinSplit Revolution is a slick little utility that makes sizing and moving windows very easy. You can click it in the tray for a dialog like the one to the left, or (even quicker) learn some very simple keyboard shortcuts.

Simply select the app or window that you want to place, then hit the proper button on the dialog or use the keyboard shortcut. The window will be resized and moved appropriately. Hit the same key multiple times and the window will go through a series of sizes.

For instance, when moving a window the right side of the screen, hit ctrl-alt-6 (on the numpad). The window goes full height and uses exactly half your monitor. Hit the keys again and it goes 33% wide. One more time for 66% width.

Check out the site’s videos to see it in action. I’m running it on my XP and Vista machines and quite impressed with it.
