What About the Boxes?

I can never decide how long to keep server boxes around. For instance, I’m in the process of doing a few production build-outs and have a bunch of boxes stacked up. Typically, once the servers are racked at the data center I’d hide the boxes for a few months and then ultimately pitch ‘em once I needed the room.
That’s not very methodical, is it?
That stack in the picture (in my office) inspired these musings
Why keep them around? I suppose a vague fear that if the server has a major failure I’ll need the original box to ship it back… Granted, if that were to happen, wouldn’t I warranty exchange the parts and keep it going?
What’s the norm for this kind of thing? What do you do with your boxes for computers or other electronics?

Uh, did you find GPP under all that stuff?
tell me about it… i have the same problem. but i move the boxes into the basement of the building for about 2 months, and then move them out!

Our IT cleanups correspond with client visits.

@Denise - I’ll be a happy man if I never find GPP again. Seriously. After 10 years, that project can still give me nightmares…
@paul - that’s close to what I do… no basement. Random closet.
@alan - LOL! I’ve done it that way too
If you happen to have bought those from a reseller, they usually have a 30-day return policy for which they need the original boxes. If it’s past that it becomes a mfg problem and they are covered under the exchange warranty. So I’d keep them for 4-5 weeks…
Ah ha… Thanks Mike. Since I know where you work I reckon I can take your word on that
