MozyPro Failures

I have two servers on which I still use MozyPro for backups. The clients associated with these servers need offsite and secure backups and MozyPro has traditionally worked well for me for that.

Actually, let me clarify: MozyPro worked well for me until the backups got too big. Then it became awful and I switched over to LogMeIn Backup which I’m still quite happy with. But as mentioned above, I still have two servers with relatively small backup sets that I left with Mozy.

Lately I’m seeing a lot of backup failures that are causing me, again, to worry about the reliability of Mozy. For instance, check this history log:

mozyPro_history_errors

That’s not very impressive – and quite disappointing.

ConnectionError1:

Most likely this is a firewall problem. Temporarily disable your firewall and attempt a backup. If the backup is successful, either contact us or your internal IT person for instructions on how to set up your MozyPro client to work with firewall software.

There are no software firewalls on these machines. Since the backups work sometimes I hesitate to blame the hardware firewall.

Bah.

What size are your backups? You know that you can have a pop up enabled that tells you when back ups fail, correct?

The backup set total size is a couple GB for each. Typical nightly jobs move a hundred or so MB of incremental updates.

    In other words: tiny.

A pop up on a server that I’d rather not logon to everyday is of little value. (the email alerts work though). I’m not really worried about being notified about all the failures. I’m more concerned about all the failures!

I hear that! I back up total size of 8.2 GB……..and I have failures too. No reason for it really!

Hey I thought of something and wanted to bring it to your attention. Do you have the latest version of Mozy? This might be causing some of your failures…….

    Good idea there, Kris.

Turns out I’m on 1.8.8.1 and the current version is .2. Granted, I also have that little “auto-update” box checked in preferences. I had assumed that it would, you know, auto update!

I’ll give the upgrade a shot though. Both servers have continued to fail nightly.

I’ve had MozyConnection problems forever. Support hardly seems concerned. I don’t understand how they’re staying in business honestly - these problems seem extremely widespread. With the newest client a connetionError3(0×80000003) is the error du jour.

@Kris - nope, one of the upgraded machines failed again last night. Suppose I’ll start up another round of the mozy support cycle now. Ugh.

@GTM - Yeah, I get some of the Error3’s on my free Mozy home account. But not nearly as often as these ConnectionError1’s on the Pro accounts.
