Desktops

The Windows Sysinternals folks released a new utility today: Desktops. It is probably no secret to most readers here that I like to play with virtual desktop apps. In fact, I bet I had this one running within 5 minutes of reading the announcement.

If I had to guess, I’d suspect that it is the logical successor to ye olde Virtual Desktop Manager from Windows XP Powertoys. Like that one, Desktops doesn’t really do a whole lot, but it definitely gets you (up to 4) virtual desktops and nice little preview applet. Oh, and some keyboard shortcuts, of course.

Here it is in action on my Vista machine:

Sure, it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that my current favorite VirtuaWin offers, but it works nicely and doesn’t have much of a footprint (under 2MB memory usage).

In fact, you could toss this on a USB key as it also doesn’t need to be installed to work. Now there’s nifty feature and something that I might use on my servers.

Speaking of options, there truly aren’t many. Set your hotkeys and determine if you want it to startup when you logon:

If there’s just one feature I’d like to see added, it would be to have a way of moving apps from one virtual desktop to another. As near as I can tell, that’s not an option and it’s something I’ve already missed even after just an hour of playing with it.

Definitely worth adding to the toolbox though!
