Admin Tool: mRemote

I’ve mentioned Royal TS and Terminals both a few times in the past. The former is a great way to run multiple Remote Desktop/Terminal service sessions and the latter offers (with a bit less polish) that same functionality along with web, VNC and other options. Both are pretty slick and I’ve used them each quite a bit until this week.

image This week I learned about mRemote. mRemote has all the “polish” of Royal TS and the flexibility (and more?) of Terminals. We’re talking RDP, VNC, ICA, SSH, Telnet, HTTP/S, rlogin and raw – and I have no idea what raw is for the record. But the others? I use many of them in my daily tasks of managing servers and network hardware.

It’s pretty slick to have one application with tabs to assorted RDP, VNC and SSH sessions. It is even more slick to be able to mix in web pages, especially since that’s how most of my network hardware is managed. Doesn’t hurt to have integrated links to the wikis either. Oh, and you can choose to render web pages with IE or XULrunner (essentially the Firefox core).

Side note: I had no luck getting it to use XULrunner 1.9. Had to regress to 1.8.1.3, for what that’s worth.

This thing is darned close to perfect except I can’t seem to convince it to allow pop ups from the web pages. Since that’s how WhatsUp notifies me of alerts, I’m hoping this can be fixed. It would also make the HP iLO2 remote consoles to work too. I have a support forum post up looking for ideas.

There’s a portable mode that works nicely for USB keys and/or online storage apps. I have it with all my other portable tools in DropBox so that I can use it from whichever machine I happen to be sitting in front of.

Weird that I had never heard of this app until this week, but I’m sure glad I’ve found it now. It rocks.
