ClamWin Clobbered Me; Trying Out Antivir

My home machine has been running Vista 64-bit for a couple months now. Initially I didn’t bother to install an antivirus program, but since I have profiles for kids and visitors I decided I’d better add something to cover me when those folks are using my rig.

I went with ClamWin as it has served me well in the past. Lightweight, but no “on-access” scanning. I figured daily/weekly scans should do the job well enough. Until recently, that is…

I’m not sure what changed (if anything), but when this machine tries to run the weekly scan it is just completely crushed. To the point where the mouse pointer won’t even move! It is truly horrible — and completely useless — while the scan runs. And after letting it run for 6 hours today I’ve given up. ClamWin has been uninstalled.

The mystery is that I don’t know if it was always this slow or not (normally I’d be at work all day for the weekly scans). Or maybe it is related to my recent install of the Vista SP2 beta? I should really be a bit more diligent on this issue, but I really just wanted to get back to a usable state.

Moving Along…

On a more positive note, Antivir now works on my machine. When I last tried it (a few years ago) things did not go so well, but it seems to run nicely now. And hey, a recent Maximum PC article said reasonably positive things about it so we’ll see how it goes.

Just go get a Home Sysadmin site license for Sunbelt Software’s VIPRE and be done with it. I think its $49 for all machines in your house.

  • Vista kills me. I have 32 and I thought about getting 64 thinking it may be an upgrade but the more I read about it, the more I think it’ll just be a whole new set of hassles. I work a lot back on XP now and it generally performs much better.

clamav works fine in windows 95,98,2000,xp linux and probably even fine on those funny macintosh operating systems.
due to vista’s incompatability with well established software API and lack of , well, nicely put, structure… alot of things simply wont work and alot of companies simply arent bothered with porting their software because simply said, there are better alternatives so logically, more people are using those alternatives as apposed to upgrading/massacaring their systems with vista.
As for Windows 7 frankly, seeing as it needs more juice and has more weight and commercial politics than XP does you just cant justify replacing a good Operating System with a shiny theme, gadget or media player when it breaks simple, essential core functionalities as backwards compatabilities with groundbreaking software developments. i.e. antivirus software and so forth.
