Browser Related Notes: Evernote / Safari / Google Toolbar

A few browser oriented items of note:

New Evernote Add-on

For the Evernote users, a new take on their Web Clipper. Adding tags, choosing the notebook – heck, all the things you’d go to Evernote to do after a clipping – can now be done on the fly. We can now also create a new note from the Clipper without having to start the EN app. I love it.

The Firefox Add-on appears to have been updated as well, but it isn’t working as nicely as the bookmarklet (for me at any rate). I can’t tell exactly if that’s expected or not from the blog announcement… for now I’m just using the bookmarklet.

Safari 4 Beta

If you like the way Google Chrome does things, you might want to have a look at the Safari 4 Beta too. Like Chrome, the tabs are now at the top of the screen. Also like Chrome, there are Top Sites which give you a sort of thumb-nailed preview of your most oft-visited sites. I like that you can “pin” them and shuffle them. Nice touch.

My unscientific observation is that it seems faster than Chrome on the JavaScript heavy sites… seriously fast.

Still no F11 mode (see Of F11 and Browsers) and middle-click doesn’t close tabs which I’ve suddenly realized is a deeply ingrained habit of mine,. Other than those quibbles it seems pretty decent. Still crashes (OK yeah, it is a beta) but seems to crash less than Safari 3 on Windows for me.

Although I definitely like the speed I don’t see this becoming my main browser quite yet. But it definitely shows potential.

Google Toolbar Beta 6

Visit the Google Toolbar site with your Internet Explorer and you’ll get offered the new Beta 6 version. Now IE users can also have the new Favorite Sites feature that I loved so much with Beta 5 for Firefox.

Chrome, Opera, Safari have built-in Favorite/Top/Whatever sites. With the Google toolbar you can have them in IE and FF as well. I think it is safe to say I’m not the only one who finds that functionality very handy.
