If you do web work on Windows, you know what a pain it is to test sites in various flavors of Internet Explorer. The newly announced SuperPreview for Internet Explorer aims to help with that challenge.
Expression Web SuperPreview for Internet Explorer is a stand-alone visual debugging tool that makes it faster and easier to migrate your sites from Internet Explorer 6 to Internet Explorer 7 or 8. With Expression Web SuperPreview for Internet Explorer, you can ensure that your Web sites work correctly in Internet Explorer 8 while also maintaining compatibility with earlier versions of Internet Explorer.
If you’re running the IE8 beta, you can see the site in IE6 and compare with IE8 in or IE8 IE7 compat mode. You can also compare the rendered site to an image or comp. Pretty slick – and after trying it on some of my own work rather horrifying!
Load up a page and hover your mouse over it. Block elements in both browser windows will be hilited. Element IDs and dimension info will be in the status bar. All stuff aimed at making it easier to spot and fix the issues.
From reading the info page at the Expression Web site it looks like this is something that will be integrated into the next version of Expression Web. Seems like that integrated version will do more than just IE versions which is something to look forward to.
Weird note: The download for this thing is 250MB. Yet the installed size is under 36 MB… what the heck?
Long story short: If you do web dev on Windows and you’re not going to be buying the next version of Expression Web, you might as well grab this freebie to add to your toolkit.

Hi Chris –
Thanks for taking a look at SuperPreview. The reason the download size is 250mb but the install size is only 36mb is because SuperPreview requires the latest version of the .NET framework. In case you do not have it, we include it in the download.
For future releases, our installer will download it automatically if you do not have it installed – so our download size should drop significantly.
Thanks for taking a look at SuperPreview! We enjoy getting feedback from our customers.

What I’d like to know is why I have to use Expression Web for most projects, but then have to use Sharepoint Designer for my IIS customers. It would really be great if these could be consolidated into one tool, call it “son-of-front page for everything”
There is a new web browser screenshot application (www.browserseal.com) that you may find useful which is not limited to IE. It currently supports FF, IE and Safari. It is still in beta, so more features and new browsers will be added in the new future.
Fully functional free beta version is available for download from http://www.browserseal.com
