Fun with rsync
So here’s what I did today: Mirroring with rsync. Oh yeah, completely geeked out and had fun learning some new stuff! Many missteps along the way, but once I found that (previous) link at HowtoForge it all came together nicely.
That particular article is aimed at mirroring web sites, but I adapted it a bit to handle the mirroring of a directory full of nightly db and site .tar files. I have an existing script that already manages pruning old versions and such and now I finally have all backups mirrored off-site to a different box.
I did run into one issue with SSH, but fortunately one of the comments helped me fix that one. I’ll never know if that was distribution related or what – and frankly, I’m just happy that it works.
While deciding how to go about this I also looked at Unison File Synchronizer. At first glance it is the cat’s meow, but it actually does more than I need right now… rsync will work for for the moment, but I’m keeping Unison in mind for the future. I dig the cross-platform possibilities…
If you have tips for either rsync or Unison I’d definitely love to hear them.
