Have you grabbed the Windows 7 Release Candidate yet? No big hurry (it’ll be available into July of 2009) but I think it is definitely worth a look.
I upgraded my work laptop earlier today. Well, perhaps upgrade is the wrong term to use… it was already running the Windows 7 beta and MS doesn’t want us upgrading those. I had to back up my key data and then flatten and re-pave it. No big deal though, the actual install took about 25 minutes and I was up and productive within another 30 minutes from then.
Yup, that quick. I installed Win 7 and then installed Firefox, Dropbox and Evernote and I was 95% complete. Sure, lots of little odds and ends to install later during the day, but with that initial package I was definitely ready for the majority of my tasks.
I liked the beta and I like the RC even more. It feels faster – and does much better on the same machine for the “experience” score. It acts more “polished”. In general, it’s everything that Vista should’ve been. Don’t confuse that as revolutionary. This is definitely more evolutionary. And that’s OK since it really does seem to run faster
After 3 months with the beta and one day with the RC I think I finally have an upgrade path from XP for the office that might actually make the end-users happy.
Are you curious? Check out the features and then give it a shot.
One final note: I have no interest in the much hyped (by the tech press) XP mode. Fortunately, I’m not in a position where I need to support old or legacy apps that won’t run in Vista or Windows 7. I have no desire to have to maintain and patch two operating systems on every box!
