Google Chrome OS

Oh wow, this is interesting news!

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

See the full poop at “Introducing the Google Chrome OS”, posted this evening. I know I’ve speculated about this in the past (but I can’t seem to find the post…).

I look forward to trying it out on my Asus Eee :-)

As I just IMed my boss…the world is over :)

I do think that GChOS will be a niche OS, running on netbooks and little else…it’s, for all practical purposes, Palm’s webOS with the google oomph behind it, which’ll probably make it better than webOS…but not something to run on a full on computer.

At least that’s what I think from what they say in their blog.

    • Yeah, while clearly it is too soon to know what it’ll really be like, it sure seems like something I’ll want on my 7″ Eee :-)

The announcement is sure WAY ahead of the product on this one. Odd timing.

  • Sounds like it’s android tweaked to run on laptops and PCs Cool!!! Highly disguised Linux(just like webOS). Cool stuff.
