Updated: See solution at the end
Check out this update install history picture:
I seem to be in a bit of a rut… I’ve installed “Security Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1” many many times! Oddly enough, I’m not sure why yet.
I get notified that I need to install the update:
I install the update and am told that everything went well:
Yet just a few seconds later I’ll get the tray notifier telling me I have updates to install – and it is the same one! Deja vu.
I’ve shutdown after installing the update. I’ve restarted after installing the update. I’ve installed it multiple times back-to-back. Nada.
One interesting note in the event logs though:
I checked my VSS service, noticed it was set to manual so just for grins I manually started it up before starting the update. No difference and same error.
Currently, my updates are coming via a push from our corporate WSUS (Windows Server Update Services) server. I might now try getting it directly from Microsoft Update instead just to see if that changes anything. Other than that, I’m open to suggestions. Got any?

Thanks to Paul on Twitter, a work-around has been found. Check out “Hotfix KB 971092 for Visual Studio 2008 SP1 install problems” for more details.

Install linux? lol!
Obviously you’ve rebooted right?
It is windows — that’s the first thing I do! (that logic seems to work well for ‘buntu too… *cough*).
But have you done the hokey pokey and turned yourself about?
I had a store caught in an update loop a while back and I finally just left it unupdated. Later it fixed itself. I’m not sure what it was, but it annoyed them that every morning when they rebooted it would go through the update motions, and then it would download the update again. Glad it wasn’t me putting up with it.
Maybe it’s like Dorable Dora and you have to tell her three times… only it needs a lot more than three times?
“Dora, I tell you three times…”
“Okie dokie, boss!”
*sigh* I miss Heinlein.
Back on topic, just realized I can’t get updates from web site on Vista or win7 machines ’cause we have the win update app instead. *mutter*
See how out of the loop I am. I thought there was always an UPDATE option on Internet Explorer.
In IE 8 they moved it from Tools to Safety, which confused me, but it was still there on XP.
Glad I’m not on the Vista boat.
I’m getting this, too … Win7 x64
It seems the problem occurs when VS is installed without the C++ components. A workaround has been posted here:

Hey Lucas – I think I found the same/similar solution here: http://msmvps.com/blogs/vstsblog/archive/2009/07/29/hotfix-kb-971092-for-visual-studio-2008-sp1-install-problems.aspx
I haven’t had a chance to try it yet today though. Let me know if the work-around works for you?
I just tried it out – seems to have worked fine
Yes, it worked for me. When I tried running the MSP file it requested UAC elevation, but failed with an error that it couldn’t open the vsvars32.bat for writing. Instead of changing the file’s permissions as suggested in that workaround, I ran the MSP file from an elevated command prompt and it worked fine.
It seems that even though the patch requests it, it still runs parts of it w/o the granted UAC elevation.
What the heck!?!?
You’ve found a way to feed facebook your blog posts?!?
Good grief! You’re a complete who… clever person. *ahem* That’s it. You’re an incredibly clever person.
I’ve had ‘em going to facebook for a while. I forget how, but I remember it was quite simple to do.
Then today it “burped” and sent through a bunch of ‘em again. Weird…
All the price we whores have to pay :-p
