OpenDNS New Plans (and Initial Confusion)
Last month, the OpenDNS folks announced their upcoming Deluxe and Enterprise plans. I’ve been using their free service for quite some time now – I’ve even integrated into our small office as part of the security solution and have configured my home and several relatives’ home networks for it as well.
Lovely stuff. Based on their basic reporting, I know it has saved me from rebuilding some infected machines.
I’ve been warily keeping an eye on the new plan announcements as I was nervous that the free offering might go away and change dramatically. Last night I saw a tweet on twitter that relaxed me a bit:
OK, that’s good right? Then I saw my buddy Nathan all spun up this morning:
I responded with a “oh no, they say nothing has changed” (which was repeated in the webinar that I attended 20 minutes later) — he replied back with a link to the new Plans & Pricing page.
No checkbox by malware protection? We freaked out a bit
(at the time, SmartCache was Enterprise only, but I see it has since been added to Deluxe plan as well)
I mentioned that this was different than what I’d read last night and heard today and shortly afterwards got a response via Twitter from OpenDNS:
So there you go. It would seem nothing has indeed changed for the free version. Just some terminology “challenges” along the way before we reached that understanding. It even got some press in today’s OpenDNS blog post announcing the arrival of the new services.
[…] there’s some confusion around the Malware Site Protection feature, as it relates to all versions of OpenDNS. Here’s what’s happening: We will continue to block Internet-scale bots and dangerous websites that spread malware in the Basic and Deluxe versions, just as we’ve done with Conficker and the recent Microsoft Zero Day Exploit. We call this Basic Botnet / Malware Protection. The Malware Site Protection feature is different and brand new, never before offered, and is included in OpenDNS Enterprise. Similarly, we have an expanded list of botnet command and control sites currently only available in the Enterprise version. It’s our hope to be able to offer this down the product line over time, but for now it’s limited to Enterprise.
