Kindle for PC beta
I see Amazon has pre-announced the Kindle for PC beta. When I first saw this I’ll admit I was pretty excited – for about 30 seconds.
- Get the best reading experience available on your PC. No Kindle required
- Access your Kindle books even if you don’t have your Kindle with you
- Automatically synchronizes your last page read and annotations between devices with Whispersync
- Create bookmarks and view the annotations you created on your Kindle
Then I remembered that I don’t like reading books on my PC. I spend enough time at my desk(s).
While trying to rationalize why this might be interesting, I thought that it could be a cool (even “green”) way to read newspapers and magazines. That would be useful right? Then I read this blurb from a bit lower on the beta page:
Kindle newspapers, magazines, and blogs are not currently available for Kindle for PC
Whoops. Well, maybe it’ll be more compelling later as the beta evolves.
What would be cool would be a version of Kindle for Windows Mobile phones. Pigs will probably fly first, but hey we can dream, right?
[Updated]
It just hit me that this could be really handy on my little Eee netbook…

Okay, beggars can’t choosers. I’m an expat New Yorker living in a small town in Europe where there is virtually NO choice of current reading material in English available. I don’t like mail ordering books from GB, I don’t need a Kindle device, I read choice magazines and newspapers online already. The Kindle for PC is an absolute Godsend. Let no one say otherwise (I cried because I had no shoes until I met a man who had….)
No thank you…you can already get magazines for free from magshark.com
