eWallet New Version – New Pricing Strategy

eWallet logo About two years ago I switched to eWallet for all my password tracking needs. Since then it has been like a second brain to me – I toss in all the usernames/passwords, links, combo locks and whatever other “security’ish” stuff I need to track in a secure fashion. I know it’ll be there when I need it.

What I really like is the ability to access my stuff – securely – via a variety of ways. I use the Windows client, the Windows Mobile app and the (beta) Web Companion. I’m never more than a few clicks or taps away from my passwords.

The new version 7.0 of eWallet was released this month. While there are some nice new features added (especially the brand new interface in the Windows client) the most notable new feature is the new pricing structure. Check this out:

With the release of eWallet 7.0 we’re completely reshaping how you buy the product. Now, you can use eWallet on any device we support for one low price. So if you switch devices in the future, or have different devices for work and home, you can use eWallet on all of them. No extra versions. No extra purchases. Because when you buy or upgrade eWallet, it’s for you, not your device.

Brilliant! I think that is a wonderful way to license software like this. Why “punish” me for changing OS or platform? Not an issue with eWallet.

My second favorite feature of 7.0? The AutoPass feature. Click the URL on an eWallet card and it will launch your browser and fill in the username and password for you. Right now this is Windows only and only for IE and Firefox. Here’s a shot of it in action:

My all time favorite feature of eWallet (not just in 7.0) has to be the Password Builder. This has been a boon in keeping me away from using the same passwords for multiple systems.

I use it a lot, especially with the Pronounceable option.

Side note: You can get PassBuilder for free without eWallet. Even if you’re not using eWallet you might want to download this and keep it around…

If you bought eWallet after August 30, 2009 and before December 1, 2009 then your upgrade to 7.0 is free. If you bought it prior to August 30th then you can get the upgrade for $10.

eWallet runs on Windows Mobile (5.0, 6.0 and 6.5), iPhone / iPod Touch, Blackberry and Windows PCs. And, of course, the Web Companion which I use at least once a day if not more often. I also notice that there’s a Mac OS X beta on the 30 trial page as well… but I don’t know much about it.

If you’re looking for a password tracking app and want to keep your data in sync across a variety of devices I’d encourage you to check out eWallet.
