Here’s a nifty little tip for the Windows server admins that I picked up this week.
I find the services app annoying. By default it always opens in “Extended” view which (imho) just wastes space right in the middle of the app. First thing I do after starting it is click “Standard” to get to the view I want.
Turns out there’s a nifty little non-intuitive way to default it to always start in Standard mode.
When opening Services from the admin menu, right-click on it and choose “Author”:

Change the view to “Standard” (this is the last time you’ll ever need to do that!) and then Exit. You’ll be prompted to save settings – do that.
Launch it again. Look, it defaulted to how you last left it! Cool huh?
This works for all sorts of things that use the MMC. Do you find yourself setting a filter every time you launch the Event Viewer? For some servers, I always filter out the informational messages to find the errors quicker.
Just launch Event Viewer in Author mode, set your filter and save it. Boom, your filter is now the default.
You can read more about MMC in author mode on Technet.
