Wubi in 32 bit Mode
I like to install Wubi on my Windows machines. I don’t use Linux full time, but definitely like to have it around and Wubi is a very easy way to make that happen. You have to be careful though: If you’re on a 64 bit machine then Wubi will install a 64 bit Ubuntu (or a ‘buntu variant). If you’ve ever tried to get Flash or AIR working under 64 bit Linux then you know it isn’t any fun…
Fortunately, there’s an easy way around that. Actually, the Wubi FAQ offers two options but right now only one of the options actually works for me. Just run the Wubi installer from the command line with the “--32bit” argument. That’s it, when the install is finished you’re a 32 bit kind of person.
The other way involves pointing the installer to a 32 bit ISO. I’ve tried that with 9.10 ubuntu and ended up with a mess. For now, I just stick with the 32 bit flag.
On a side note, I’m pleased to see that the recent 9.10 Ubuntu version offers drivers for the Broadcom B43 chipset. No ndiswrappers necessary. Sweet! Makes setting things up on an older laptop a heckuva lot easier. (I’m not a purist, I took the “STA” version option even though I’ve read it is proprietary).
