Remember Google Gears? (previous mentions) As a way to run web applications when not connected it sure seemed like just the ticket. Well, don’t get too attached — Google will be dropping support for it.
And yeah… that about sums it up. Hello HTML5.
If you’ve wondered why there haven’t been many Gears releases or posts on the Gears blog lately, it’s because we’ve shifted our effort towards bringing all of the Gears capabilities into web standards like HTML5. We’re not there yet, but we are getting closer.
Funny thing is, as much as I’ve always been excited about getting Gears enabled web applications, I’ve very, very rarely actually ran any of them offline. I’m just not offline, or traveling, enough to have personally ever been part of the target audience.
