Hi all,
I am going crazy. If I boot Ubuntu 10.04LTS under VMware in console mode the keyboard works. In gnome there is no way. I already tried the "dpkg-reconfigure console-setup" but teh keyboard does not work.
I edited the console-setup manually (using onboard or cut and paste from windows). Everybody fixes the issue with the solution above. In my system there is no way....

My solution:

1. Login with the On Screen Keyboard
2. System -> Preferences -> Remote Desktop
3. Check 'Allow others to view your desktop"
4. Make sure "Allow other to control your desktop" is checked too
5. Close
6. Open VNCViewer on HostOS ( win 7)
7. Connect to VM, and click "Allow" when remote desktop dialog appears in VM.
8. Open a Terminal and run 'dpkg-reconfigure console-setup' and choose defaults
9. Reboot
10. Now go disable Remote Desktop

Here's what works for me:
1. Login (it worked when I entered Recovery Mode and then run failsafeX).
2. In terminal:
cd /etc/default
sudo nano console-setup
3. Find line: XKBMODEL=”pc105″
4. Change to: XKBMODEL=”evdev″
5. Reboot.

Thank you, I had the same problem, no keyboard even after logging in. Since I had no ssh set up, I used the on-screen keyboard and installed VMware tools. It works for me now
