Tomorrow, September 30, is my last day of work for the company that I’ve been with for over six years. It has been a tumultuous and exciting six years with them and I’ve learned a lot. Not only about technology, but also about trending towards becoming a more civilized human being. (sadly, I don’t always apply what I learn…!).
When I started there I was rejoining some good friends and I developed a few more friendships – both in and out of the company – that I fully expect to keep alive over the coming years. It has been very rewarding and we have accomplished some pretty cool stuff.
But it is time to move on.
While working that job I’ve also had my side business going nights and weekends and there has been steady work there. One of my steadiest clients, a local Managed Services Provider called machineLOGIC, has invited me to come join their growing team. We all enjoy working together and we seem to get good stuff done together.
So I accepted.
While I feel like I’m about saddle a cyclone, I’m very excited to tackle this new opportunity in a relatively new and growing line of business. I fully expect to continue to learn and develop new skills – and I’ll be looking to the new job for inspiration on articles for this site as well. Everybody wins!
I’ll miss the folks at the old gig, can’t deny it. However, I simply can’t wait to take on the new challenges and responsibilities of my new role.
Big day, Friday!

I’m super excited for you.
There’s something in the air, lots of people mixing things up by choice. I did so recently and it felt sort of weird… all these ppl losing their jobs and I’m changing jobs… It’s a wonderful blessing and luxury we both have had and it’s awesome there are people both at the old and the new job ready to help out and be supportive. I suspect it’s because we’ve both learned a little civility over the past few years, less picking our teeth with forks and playing the geek card when we call someone an idiot… less calling people idiots probably. It used to be so easy… “I work with computers and machines, i don’t mean it in a bad way. Why you have to be so sensitive?” lol (I didn’t have that same geek card to play professionally, it was my hobby that I blamed it on.)
Anyway, this isn’t about me. It’s about you showering more. Congrats!
You’re on a horse.*
*Old Spice reference to them what missed it.
I’m on a horse! With Diamonds! Thanks, Rich.
I was pretty sure this post was coming about a month ago… definitely surreal to have a job lined up when so many are still looking. And it is certainly all about networking, folks. http://www.simplerich.com/2010/08/30/changes-its-been-a-good-run-part-3-of-3/comment-page-1/#comment-821
Very cool!
I did something similar this spring, left a position as a JOAT for an IT contracting company and went to head up the IS dept at a hardrock gold mine. Its proven absolutely fascinating, because all my predecessors were firm believed in duct tape and bailing wire and I’m having to rip it out and redo it correctly. Some of it I can understand, we’re more than 3 hours out of Fairbanks, but temp measures lasting in years are not temp measures.
On the upside, my manager(the comptroller) is tickled pink with how much better the network is running as we’ve redone things correctly. Still have a long haul to go to get it up to what I consider acceptable, but we’re making progress.
I know things will work out great for you buddy, so all I’ll wish you is lots and lots of fun on the new job, and one more shower a month
Oh! and Dave, the only thing more permanent than a temp measure is a stopgap action
Congrats, Chris, and serious props for having the guts to stpe out of the comfort and up the challenge factor.
Anothre good friend of mine (former AD support team lead for Microsoft Canada) has a great observation:
Sorry – somehow got a publish signal by accident.
To finish the above comment, the observation is…
Adventure = Risk X Opportunity
Clearly you’re launching on an adventure. Tighten up the cinch on that saddle and ride it for all it’s worth!
