Give XP a Win 7 facelift

February 20, 2009 by Chris · 2 Comments

I’ll cheerfully admit that while I like Windows XP I’ve never liked the “tonka” or “crayola” themes. Honestly? I’d rather change to the Classic UI instead.

And that’s just what I’d do until I discovered the XP Zune theme. That quickly became the first thing I’d install on a fresh XP load – and the included desktop wallpaper would be the first thing I’d remove! (seriously, great theme but awful wallpaper).

I’ve looked at some other XP skins or themes over the years but haven’t seen any others that caught my eye enough to try… until tonight.

Tonight I found the Seven Remix XP package. This is an theme installer that will transform your XP into the new Windows 7 UI. New icons, start menu, etc.

I was immediately intrigued and decided that this would just the thing for my little Eee. Lord knows, this thing will never run the real Windows 7, so might as well pretend, right?  ;-)   And you know what? It’s a great facelift. Very very similar to the new 7 UI.

I like it. So far no observed ill effects either. It comes with an uninstaller though, so if you don’t like it – or have issues – it should be reasonably simple to uninstall.

[hat tip to Rich who pointed me to the Lifehacker article
(keep an eye on the comments there for potential issues. Just ‘cause I haven’t had any doesn’t mean you won’t!)]
